War of the Green Lanterns by Brad Cutrer on Jul 13, 2011 | Posted in: Books, Comic Books

This review covers Green Lantern 64 – 67, Green Lantern Corps 58 – 60, and Green Lantern : Emerald Warriors 8 – 10.  Luckily they are labeled on the cover in the order to which they should be read.

Despite my earlier post on cross comic book stories (http://www.geekcasual.com/blogs/whats-bothering-me-right-now-in-entertainment/), I just finished War of the Green Lanters.  (It should be noted that I already read these three series from the beginning).

If you are unfamiliar with the Green Lantern series, let me bring you up to speed.  After the events of the Blackest Night, the Lanterns of the various colors (the Crayon Crusade) visit different places on Earth to capture their guardians.  The guardians are powerful entities that represent each emotion.  Hal, Green Lantern – 2814.1, kept his duty in the dark from the Oa guardians as this is unlawful to them.

After multiple attempts and failures to contain their guardians the Crayon Crusade met an enemy all too familiar:  Krona.  Krona was the guardian in charge of creating the green rings and batteries.  Our story begins when he captures the other Lanterns.

All, that is, except for Hal.  What proceeds is a great action packed story involving all four of the Earth Green Lanterns.  The other Green Lanterns go renegade and our heroes are given an option:  adopt the other Lantern rings that were remaining when their hosts were captured.  One of my favorite parts of the series is that they’ve adapted each color of the Lantern to a different personality type, and that’s greatly demonstrated in this book.

Despite this comic book spanning different series, the storyline remains unchanged.  The artwork is by far some of the best since the Yellow Lantern Corps saga.  They also did a great job of doing some foreshadowing for the minor characters in the series.  I don’t want to spoil the end, but with DC’s relaunch of their titles next month, this really did the job of setting it up.

You don’t need much more back story than that to enjoy this series.  I definitely hope they release this in one trade paperback.  This is a great place to start reading this title.  I only hope that the relaunch is as successful as these issues.
