Scarlet by Brad Cutrer on Sep 10, 2010 | Posted in: Books, Comic Books

Owner created content is always something I enjoy. My first experience was with Y: The Last Man, a title I’ll recommend to anyone, comic book reader or not. I find those writers that own their content are a little more careful with the direction that they move in. Unfortunately I have difficulty in finding titles until the run has ended. Hopefully I haven’t dodged a bullet with a recent release of Scarlet.

The title is written by Brian Michael Bendis and drawn by Alex Maleev. With only the first two issues out, not much has been presented. What has been shown, and left up for questions in the following issues, is outstanding. The story starts with our heroine, presumably named Scarlet, choking a cop. The fourth wall is broken with the reader, and we get her perspective on her life in Portland, and what should follow as her assault on what’s wrong in the world.

The art style is great.  Every thing in the comic has multiple shades of color cast upon it like a soft water color picture. The angles drawn and emotions given in this title are great.

Bendis and Maleev have a letters column in the back, similar to most owner created comics.  You get a lot of good feedback presented there as well as some behind the scenes or even alternate art.

Note that this is a “superpower-less” comic, but don’t let that distract from a good story.  Obviously the creative team behind this series have a lot of tricks up their sleeves.  I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds.
