Press Play: Side One by Brian Webster on Jul 08, 2010 | Posted in: Music

I wanted to write something cool about music but I have been less than inspired lately, so I’m going to share some random songs that caught my eye while perusing my iTunes library.

I love David Bowie. I could have picked anything by Bowie but this one is on the soundtrack of Almost Famous, a music movie that I really like.

No Surprises is one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite albums of all time–OK Computer by Radiohead. Other than “no surprises” I really couldn’t tell you any of the lyrics because Thom Yorke’s droning blends in with the haunting melody as if it was just another instrument.

Here’s another great song from another favorite of mine–Tea For the Tillerman. If you like folk rock, copious amounts of Cat Stevens should populate your library. If you aren’t a fan, take a listen and become a convert.

I can’t listen to this song without thinking about the scene from Watchmen in the Comedian’s apartment. It’s a great song in its own right, but who would have thought that it could complement a fight scene so well.

If I danced (alcohol related dancing excluded), this song would get me moving. You might remember the song “Canned Heat” from the movie Napoleon Dynamite but I like this song, from the same album–Synkronized, better.

Nerd rock/rap doesn’t get better than this. Not only does mc chris create catchy song full of references to things geeks love (star wars, video games and candy), but his live shows are always a blast. This song is one of a series of Star Wars related songs he has and is actually a reference to a joke from a previous album.

This last one for today is one you probably haven’t heard of before. The song is in French but you don’t have to understand the words to appreciate this beautifully sad song. The singer, Charles Aznavour, has almost a thousand songs to his credit and sings in at least four different languages–this song actually has an English version, but I like the French one better. This one is my favorite of the songs I picked today. Bonus points if you find out what it means.

Take a listen to these songs and let me know if there’s any that you liked or hated and be sure to share some songs you enjoy in the comments below. I’ll be back next week with some more picks.
