Three Under 300: DC Universe, Magicka, Kirby’s Epic Yarn by Mark Whitney on Mar 03, 2011 | Posted in: Games, Reviews

Hate long reviews? At Geek Casual, we do too! This week, we’ll be looking at DC Universe Online, Magicka, and Kirby’s Epic Yarn — all under 300 words!

DC Universe (PS3, PC) ($59.99/$49.99 — $14.99/month for access on either)

Much like a traditional Massively Multiplayer Game, DC Universe Online has you going on quests – lots of them. But, unlike most MMOs, DC Universe Online has you completing said quests alongside some of the biggest names in the DC Universe! Less command-based and more combo-heavy, DCUO is a beautiful game that combines hack-n-slash properties with MMORPG elements to make a fairly amazing game. With promised content patches, constant bug fixes, and a vast storyline to traverse within the universe, DCUO could have some staying power and should be something you at least try out for the first, free month included in the box.

Magicka (PC) ($9.99 on Steam)

Magicka has you taking on the role of a wizard who hails from a sacred order and has been tasked with thwarting the plans of an evil sorcerer who is causing havoc within the world. Throughout the game, you’ll combine elements to make your own spells and use them to overcome obstacles and thwart enemies in this satire-heavy adventure game. While the concept is amazing and the game looks great, lacking controls and strange decisions on saves and checkpoints keeps the title from being as amazing as it truly could be. Check it out, but be warned; frustration waits in the world of Magicka.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn (Wii) ($49.99, $39.99 on Amazon)

While Kirby’s Epic Yarn is a massive turning point for the pink puffy protagonist, the game itself is a solid direction and, while easy, certainly a fun experience. Sucked into the world of yarn, Kirby eschews his power-absorbing suck for the yarn-like abilities that allow him to transform into a car, a parachute, and use a whip to traverse levels and defeat enemies. The style of the game is amazing and the colorful music and great writing make it a great title for the Wii that you should certainly give a try.
