Part of our weekend ritual for game night is to look around for games that we might want to add to the mix. While most discussion is about board games we see online, we’ll sometimes visit our local bookstores for reference. Among the large box games we’ve seen are these neat little card games called Fluxx.
There are many versions of this game but we’ve recently purchased Fluxx and Zombie Fluxx. The rules are basic; at first. Each player starts with three cards, draws one card, and plays one card. Among the many types of cards are New Rule Cards. These range from drawing more cards, playing more cards, hand sizes, what if situations, and everything else under the sun. I think that’s why I feel we’ll be playing this game more often: It’s never the same.
Beyond the wacky rule cards are action cards, goal cards, keepers (items needed to win), and creepers (items that can prevent you from winning). It’s incredible that the game is pretty well balanced. Some examples of variations of Fluxx are Zombie Fluxx, Monty Python Fluxx, and Pirate Fluxx. There are many other editions with their own wacky rules. There’s even blank Fluxx cards to create your own sets.
What’s the best thing about this game? It’s fair because it’s chaotic. Anything and everything can happen in the game, and while there is a little bit of strategy you must remain adaptive to it. I also like that there isn’t much dialogue about the rules. The game doesn’t take long to play with multiple people, unless you have friends who like to keep the game going.
If you enjoy Fluxx I definitely recommend checking out Zombies!!! and Chrononauts. Those two titles are also part of our collection. They are a little more time consuming than Fluxx, so be aware.
